As we enter the 2nd quarter of 2015, this is a great time to do a little spring-cleaning for your organization. If you were audited by the Department of Labor or EEOC next week, would you be prepared?

Below are ten steps to help ensure your HR house is in order.

As a business do you:

  1. Correctly classify each employee as exempt or non-exempt and have a clear distinction between employees and contractors.
  2. Ensure that all federal, state & local compliance postings in a space that is frequented by employees and the postings are current.
  3. Have a health & safety program in place and are in compliance with all record-keeping requirements
  4. Regularly review your policies, procedures & practices and update any outdated information.
  5. Have an updated employee handbook that all employees have reviewed.
  6. Consistently share positive and constructive feedback with employees and have a mechanism in place for tracking employee performance.
  7. Conduct employee reviews annually (at a minimum).
  8. Have a fair and equitable compensation plan in place and adhere to this plan.
  9. Review your employee files every six months and ensure you are in compliance with what belongs in an employee file (caution: no medical information, including benefits forms, and I9s should be in your employee files; these need to be filed separately).
  10. Conduct regular employee satisfaction surveys and take necessary actions to make your business an employer of choice based on the feedback received.

If you can answer yes to the 10 points above, congratulations, you are doing well!
